No Cookies for Ferrets: Cooking the Books with Jodi Meadows

HarperCollins | IndieBound | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Books-A-Million | iBookstore | Powells

It’s tough to interview a friend for a podcast, but I did just that for you with Jodi Meadows, renowned cookie aficionado and author of the stupendously successful YA Incarnate Series, as well as the new Orphan Queen, out this month. The risks are many: giggling, talking too much, … that she knows where I live

but I didn’t realize that I would be walking into a recipe mineshaft.

It’s true. Jodi Meadows’ recipe is for the er, soup… she calls it soup… she feeds her pet ferrets. And you can only hear it here, on Cooking the Books.

But much more to the point is that Jodi also tells us about food etiquette in The Orphan Queen – and how several of her characters’ survival habits at rough and tumble tables risk revealing them at court. More than that, she discusses a force of nature that impacts all in her book, but some more than others. The Orphan Queen is a YA novel about an orphaned princess fighting to reclaim her kingdom, while hiding her powers from the masked vigilante hunting her. Set in a world where magic is not just illegal, but soon to destroy everything. . . . Check it out, after

The ingredients for podcast #009 – No Cookies for Ferrets:

  • needing to be faster with a fork than the average orphan
  • three tons of baked goods
  • one magical silver cloak
  • orphans
  • ferrets who are bibliophiles
  • the occasional banquet
  • one Black Knife
  • cookies
  • more cookies
  • and *that* recipe

See if you can picture my face when Jodi gives us that recipe. As a bonus, tweet me *your* face @fran_wilde #cookingthebooks when you hear it? Let’s see what happens…

With thanks as always to the wonderful John DeNardo, Paul Weimer, Kristin Centorcelli and everyone at SFSignal for hosting the upcoming first-ever Cooking The Books interdimensional eating contest. That I haven’t told them about yet.

Leave your questions here after the podcast and we’ll be sure V. gets them.
