The Joy of Cookbooks

Friday 16:00 – 17:00, 2210 (Kansas City Convention Center) – Nigella Lawson has said that if a cookbook has one amazing recipe you return to again and again it is a keeper. On the other hand, do we really need to keep a cookbook just for one recipe? What is it about them that make cookbooks so addictive to collect and how many do you really use? Are they just new, or do you cherish family heirlooms, and even use old ones from thrift shops and yard sales?

Priscilla Olson (M), Dr. Mary Anne Mohanraj, Fran Wilde, Cat Rambo, Dr. Mary A. Turzillo Ph.D.

Food scarcity is a global issue, food povery is a growing issue in affluent countries where food is not scarce but wealth is increasingly divided. Food technology in production and farming methods continue to change and develop. Our panel considers some of the serious issues that impact upon the future of food and ask whether we really expect to be eating food from the yeast vats, artificially grown meat tissue or whether we will all become vegan.

Hold The Door!: The Importance of Unlikely Heroes

Saturday 12:00 – 13:00, 2206 (Kansas City Convention Center) – Like Hodor, from Game of Thrones, some of the best heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities…and some of the most heroic acts consist of just holding the door. There isn’t a standard “hero” model that characters must follow, instead the best stories are filled with complex characters who play their role to the fullest of their ability. We discuss the impact, opportunities and challenges of heroic secondary characters and name some favorites.
